Gui zhi and zhi gan cao form the pair that strengthens heart yang and by adding ban xia we can transform and descend phlegm accumulation due to cold in the lungs, chest, and stomach domain.

Geng mi is used in the Shang han lun to regenerate fluid loss due to heat as seen in formulas like mai men dong, zhu ye shi gao tang.
